Redundant Temperature Sensor

 

The redundant temperature sensor posesses two measuring elements integrated into the measuring tip of the sensor. In case of malfunction of one measuring element a switch over to the other reserve sensor is initiated automaticly.

Application

sensors are often subjected to mechanical or thermal stresses whereby the accuracy of the measurement can be deteriorate. Therefore sensors have to be calibrated regularly to prevent fail measurements. To avoid these time-consuming and expensive calibration processes, the reference check has to take place automatically.

Redundant sensors are often installed in wind power plants for monitoring the main rotor bearing or gearbox. They are used generally for installation points or locations with difficult accessibility such as offshore plants.

Furthermore redundantly designed sensors offer an increased functional safety paired with potential savings of system costs. In general the new sensor can be mounted at established installation locations without any structural changes.

Structure / Functional principle

The reference check is executed by a redundantly configured temperature sensor, where two measuring elements are integrated in the measuring tip. The protection tube is designed with a diameter of ø6 mm or ø8 mm. The electronic installed in the sensor head checks periodically both RTDs -built in the same sensor housing- on their functionality, interruptions or short-circuits. In case of malfunction of one measuring element a switch over to the other reserve sensor is initiated automatically.The sensor is available with a fixed connection cable or an M12 connector.
