Slot Thermocouple (TE-NT)

This construction form is equivalent to the rigid Pt -100 slot resistance thermometer (type NWT-ST) with regard to insulation, dimensions and ranges of operation within the coils of electric motors, generators and transformers. While the slot resistance thermometer possesses greater precision of measurement (+/- 0.3 C), the slot thermocouple has a shorter response time.

Because of the special inner structure made of a copper sheet for heat contact between the measuring point and its surroundings, the temperature can be measured over a greater length (area) than is usual for thermocouples.

Mica insulation ensures sufficient electric strength and stability, as it is requested for industrial thermometers of this type.

The extension and the compensation line are each and together insulated with glass silk. To prevent moisture from penetrating into the glass silk insulation, a varnished fiberglass hose (LGLS) is pulled over the entire length of the extension wires right up to the cold junction. This hose also serves very good as mechanical protection. Slot thermocouples are avalable as type K, J or L.

Thermocouples insulated by shrinkable tubing (TE-SH)

Thermocouple with an insulated measuring point i.e. coil head thermocouples: this specific type has its origin and main field of application in electric motors, generators and transformers industries. Because of its compact shape and its insulation, this sensor type can be installed directly in a stator and in transformer coils. The insulation of the measuring point can be carried out by shrinkable tubing or by cementing in metal or ceramic sleeves or in screw-in housing.

EPHY-MESS coil head thermocouples can also be used in all areas of industrial measurement and control technology for monitoring temperature processes. The great advantage of this type is based on the small dimensions and the resulting short response time. 

Coil head thermocouples insulated with shrinkable tubing: the measuring point and a part of the thermoelectric wire are insulated with shrinkable tubing. Can be connected to a suitable thermocouple plug.

Thermocouple, cemented into a metal sleeve (TE-MH)

Thermocouples cemented into a metal sleeve already have a high mechanical resistance, and it is easy to install the sensors. The advantage of small dimensions with fast response time is maintained. The sleeve material can be selected from any common metals in almost any dimension.

Thermocouples in ceramic sleeve (TE-KH)

Thermocouples cemented into a ceramic sleeve of  3 x 15 mm or of 4.9 x 16 mm, already have a high mechanical resistance, and it is easy to install the sensors. The advantage of small dimension with fast response time is maintained.

Thermocouple, cemented into screw-in housing (TE-WK-ESF) and cable transition sleeve (KÜH)

Thermocouples cemented into screw-in housings are especially suitable for measuring surface temperatures of the housing of electric motors, generators, transformers and of all other locations accessible by a threaded hole.

Straight Plug-in Thermocouple with connection head and thermowell (TE-ESLT)

Plug-in thermocouples are used to measure or regulate temperatures in ranges up to 400°C, for example, in polymer processing machines, injection moulding machines, cylinder heads and oil tubes of motors, bearings, pipelines and containers, generators and transformers. They are usually plugged into a hole in the machine and are easy to replace. Plug-in thermocouples have a spring-loaded mounting and a bayonet cap. The receiving joint (screw-in bayonet nipple or sheath) is available as an accessory.

EPHY-MESS plug-in thermocouples, which have short response times, absorb heat via the highly heat conductive base of the protective pipe (stainless steel). The shape of the bottom (flat, spherical, drill angle 120°) can be adapted to the geometry of the hole for better heat transfer. The thermometers are also manufactured with a compression spring and a bayonet cap, whereby the sensor is firmly pressed against the bottom of the screw-in or the drilling hole and a better thermal coupling is achievable depending on the application.

The standard thermocouples are of type J (Fe-CuNi) and type K (NiCr-Ni). Custom made units with other thermoelectric wires (types L, S and R) are possible. Sensors can be assembled with either one sensor or two thermocouples, which use strengthened isolated thermal wire, or a directly attached compensation wire on the cable outlet side.

Foil Thermocouples (TE-FPI)

Stick-on foil thermocouples have been specially designed for measurements directly on surfaces. Hence their field of application in research, development and production is located where one has to measure temperature distributions and gradients in housing, heat radiation or heat efficiency, or where no space is available for any other larger thermometer.

Foil thermocouples offer the following advantages:

  • high flexibility
  • small dimensions (7 x 7 x 0.16 mm)
  • low response times (as low as 0.06 s)
  • simple installation (just stick on)

 

The extremely flat measuring elements are embedded in a foil which is impregnated with cresylic resin and have two metal stripes for connection. These stripes permit easy connection of extension wires. The one for the plus pole has a red marking to avoid wrong connection. 

Elements of type K (NiCr-Ni) are embedded in an oxidized aluminium foil that is impregnated with phenolic resin. The very high temperature conductivity of aluminium and the good temperature transmission between surface and sensor even allow temperature shock measurements on surfaces.

The elements can be attached to a surface with any standard adhesive, as long as a good heat contact is assured to measure the temperature. Special adhesives for temperatures of up to 200°C can be ordered from EPHY-MESS.

Foil  thermocouples are available as types J (Fe-CuNi), T (Cu-CuNi) and K (Ni-CrNi).
